Keto diet (also known as the ketogenic diet) is a diet where you limit your carb intake to the very minimum (if not completely, the amount of net carbs you intake on the ketogenic diet needs to be very low).
So naturally, that means you need to avoid certain foods you’re probably used to eating, such as bread.
But, lucky for you, since the keto diet has become very popular over the last few years, there are many keto recipes to find, as well as keto food and keto bread options to buy in tons of different markets and bakeries, so you can still enjoy the foods you love.
Sandwiches are amazing for breakfast, snack, lunch, and dinner – any meal you can think of.
So, when it comes to making that sandwich keto, you need to think about the bread (to make sure the bread you’re using is keto-friendly, or you can make a lettuce-wrapped sandwich if you want it to also be gluten-free and you like a lighter option), but also the sandwich fillings. A low carb sandwich can be just as delicious as the non-keto one!
So, here is a roundup of delicious sandwich fillings you can put in your keto bread for the perfect and easy keto lunch.
15 Keto Sandwich Fillings
Cream Cheese
One of the best sandwiches out there is a breakfast sandwich. Specifically, bagels! And what goes with bagels? Cream cheese! Lucky for you, cream cheese is good to eat on a keto diet, so if you can find (or make!) some keto bagels, put some cream cheese on them, and you have a delicious keto breakfast. It’s one of my favorite sandwich ideas!
Deli Meat
One of the best keto friendly sandwich fillings is deli meat. It’s so versatile, there are many different types of deli meat, so you’ll definitely be able to create something you love. There’s turkey, chicken, ham, pepperoni, bacon, and much more. Pair it with a keto spread, some cheese, and maybe a salad like iceberg or tomatoes, and you have the perfect keto sandwich (on keto bread, of course). Just note, while most deli meats are keto-friendly it’s still a good idea to check the specific brand before buying, just to be sure.
Roast Beef
Roast beef is so delicious, and it’s keto friendly! It’s amazing for sandwiches, and can be paired with many different things for a delicious keto breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Chicken
Chicken is an amazing thing to put on your sandwich! You can put grilled chicken, shredded chicken, or even fried chicken (just make sure you use all keto-friendly ingredients when making it). Put some cheese on there, a keto sauce, and a salad, and you have one of the most amazing, tasty keto friendly lunch recipes.
Pulled Pork
Mustard, pulled pork, keto pickles – is there a better low carb sandwich? Just make sure you make the pulled pork yourself, so you can avoid any sugary ingredients (such as BBQ sauce) so you make it keto-friendly, or check when you’re buying to confirm.
Cheese, Marinara, and Pepperoni
Make a keto pizza sandwich by combining keto low carb bread, cheese, marinara sauce (make it yourself so you’re sure it’s keto friendly, or buy some that specifically say they’re keto), and pepperoni, and you have probably one of the best keto recipes out there. Broil or grill the sandwich so the cheese melts like it does on a regular pizza, and you’ll have the best easy keto lunch or dinner sandwich.
Veggies
If you’re vegetarian or vegan, or if you just like veggies (as you should!), roast some veggies in the oven (make sure they’re all keto friendly, so no potatoes or anything with carbs), and put them in a keto sandwich along with some cheese (if you’re not vegan of course).
Egg Salad
Egg salad is super delicious, quick and easy to make and it’s keto friendly! Just make sure you use low-carb ingredients when you make your salad, so you don’t accidentally break your keto diet.
Tuna Salad
Just like egg salad, tuna salad is super quick, easy and delicious, and if you use keto ingredients, it will be keto. It’s one of the best things you can put on your keto bread! You can even make a tuna melt by adding cheese and broiling it. No matter what you choose to make, a tuna salad sandwich will NOT disappoint you.
Meat & Cheese
We covered some examples, but any meat & cheese can be amazing on a sandwich. It’s not only keto friendly, but it’s delicious and you’re definitely used to eating it.
Falafel
Falafel is an insanely delicious filling for any vegetarians, vegans, or people who like the taste. It goes so well on sandwiches, and with some other fillings, it can definitely become one of your favorite sandwiches. It’s the best on pita bread, so if you can find some keto pita bread, or if you can make it, definitely try it that way.
Meatballs
Meatballs can be made keto (they’re not all keto, but they can definitely be made in a keto-friendly way), which is amazing for all people on the keto diet. Pair them with some keto marinara sauce and some cheese, and you’ll get the most delicious keto meatball sub you could possibly ask for.
Steak
Another type of meat that deserves to be mentioned is steak. If you’re looking for something a bit more fancy, steak is the way to go when it comes to keto sandwich fillings.
Avocado
Avocado is not only delicious, but it contains a lot of healthy fats, so it’s a great thing to eat, especially for breakfast. Make avocado toast on a keto piece of toast, and there you have the best keto breakfast “sandwich”. Or you can also put slices of avocado in a sandwich with some meat, cheese, veggies, or whatever you’re making.
Eggs
Eggs can be great additions to sandwiches. They’re of course keto, and you can use them in so many ways. You can scramble them for a breakfast sandwich, boil and slice them to add to a meat and cheese sandwich, or even fry them! A fried egg goes perfectly on so many sandwiches – from avocado ones, to cream cheese ones. Most of my favorite sandwich ideas include fried eggs!
